This is just a reminder that this Wednesday, October 19th, at 7:30 PM there will be two events, both at the YMCA!
-----------
We will have a group from Appalachian Voices come visit and give a very special presentation at the YMCA! This event was coordinated by the Beyond Coal Campaign project.
Appalachian Voices is an award-winning, environmental
non-profit committed to protecting the land, air and water of the central and
southern Appalachian region, focusing on reducing coal’s impact on the region
and advancing our vision for a cleaner energy future. The presentations include
a discussion about mountaintop removal and the Appalachian Treasures slideshow,
a short video about the impacts of this mining process with images and voices
from the region. Along with directly impacted residents, Appalachian Voices travels
across the country to build a national base to gain
support for the Clean Water Protection Act and the Appalachia Restoration Act.
Mountaintop removal has already destroyed over
one million acres of forested mountains, decimated over 500 mountains, and
buried over 1,200 miles of streams throughout West Virginia, Kentucky and
Tennessee. Families and communities living near mountaintop removal mine sites
throughout Appalachia continually deal with the threat and reality of appalling
conditions including polluted drinking water, continual blasting that damages
homes and wells, job loss for coal miners and other community members and
decreased quality of health. To learn more about mountaintop removal, you can visit http://www.ilovemountains.org/

Also happening that night, the Green Observer and Students for Environmental Concerns will be hosting a one-night free screening of the film Climate Refugees at 7:30 PM at the YMCA. Climate Refugees was the only official film screened at United Nations COP15 in Copenhagen and was a Sundance Film Festival selection. There will be pizza and drinks provided, and the film will run until 9 PM.
